The same can be said of GZA’s Liquid Swords, a captivating puzzle box of philosophy and street tales. Produced entirely by the RZA (save for the CD-only bonus track), the album used sounds plucked from a wide variety of sources, including New Edition, Three Dog Night, and Cannonball Adderley. RZA came up with challenging patterns and rhythms that fit the deep lyricism and coded language that the GZA penned over them. It was closer to Enter the Wu than “The Purple Tape” and provided a perfect representation of what the GZA brought to the squad.

That alone would be enough to walk away with the year. But we’re not done. 1988 was also the year that Marley released his compilation album In Control, Volume 1, which featured Juice Crew artists and affiliates like Craig G, Masta Ace, Biz, and Heavy D—as well as, for some reason now lost to time, Roxanne Shanté dissing Salt-N-Pepa for “Push It.” Marley’s production is top-notch throughout, but there’s also the little matter of “The Symphony.” The song is arguably the greatest rap posse cut of all time, and Marley’s genius idea of mashing up Otis’ “Hard to Handle” with a classic breakbeat is no small part of the reason why. When you add that accomplishment to everything else, it becomes clear that, even in the year of Nation of Millions, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Straight Outta Compton, Critical Beatdown, and Strictly Business, the production god of QB stands supreme.

The Zoo’s annual Jungle Bells celebration, free with admission, transforms its 100 acres into a wild winter wonderland of “twinkling lights, merry-making performances, and festive foods.” Expect “seasonal decorations, animal experiences, costumed characters, lighted displays and live entertainment – including [their] zany Dr. Zoolittle… and Santa.” A highlight is the interactive Jingle Brass Band on the stage at the front entrance, which is guaranteed to get your young ones, and you, singing and dancing along. Runs Dec. 14, 2018 through Jan. 6, 2019 from 9 am to 8 pm, although the real fun happens after sundown when the colorful lights and animal-shaped light sculptures brighten the zoo grounds. Closes at 5 pm on December 24.

Boswell: There was a lot of rehearsal for the dojo sparring-program scene. You can actually see Keanu hold the wire when he runs up the post and does the flip backward. You can’t see the wire itself, but you can see his hand resting on the wire. His hand is kind of rigid, because he’s pressing on the wire to get through the flip. It’s such a tricky move, and it doesn’t make him look any less badass doing it.

When I was 30, my dad died by suicide with a gunshot through his chest. My husband, my 1-year-old daughter and I were the last to leave the funeral home. As we began driving, this song began to play. It wasn’t sad, it was an anthem. I felt at peace. I felt freaked out this coincidence happened, but the car was so quiet as we all listened without saying a word. The line "There ain’t no easy way out" took on a new meaning. I knew he had been sick with mental illness and addiction for many years and suffered at the end of his life with these battles. Suicide is an intensely sad option to get out of this broken world, but man, there was no easy way out.
