BURNING At Cannes, one of the metrics of buzz is Screen International magazine’s “jury grid,” with critics contributing daily ratings. The South Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s film broke the record for the highest score in the grid’s yearslong history. His ecstatically reviewed adaptation of a Haruki Murakami story concerns an aimless young man (Yoo Ah-in); the mysterious young woman (Jun Jong-seo) with whom becomes involved; and the wealth-flaunting charmer (Steven Yeun) who comes between them.
Show Me the Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall You know Jim Marshall’s work: That shot of Johnny Cash flipping the bird? That was his. The one of Janis Joplin slumped on the couch, Southern Comfort bottle cradled in her arms? Yup, that was his too. Those early Rolling Stone covers? Marshall did those as well. The man had a knack for being at the right place at the right time, like when the beatniks were hanging out in San Francisco’s North Beach; when jazz legends like John Coltrane and Miles Davis came through town; when a young Bob Dylan was bopping around Greenwich Village; when the Civil Rights movement and the anti-war movement were changing America; when the Bay Area became the ground zero for 1960s counterculture and the Beatles played their last show at Candlestick Park and Hendrix set Monterey Pop on fire.
The only thing that could make thousands of sparkling lights more spectacular is seeing their glittering splendor reflected in the Bay. Have a glass of your own sparkles (champagne) and be transported, literally, for a close-up view of the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights from your front row seat on the water. Choose from the Spectator Cruise (a narrated night tour of the harbor and this year’s boats, decorated in a tropical island theme) or the Dinner Cruise, which also includes a three-course meal and live entertainment, as if gazing upon the colorful luster from all those tall masts isn’t entertaining enough.
Regular eye exams are especially important with age, when the risk of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration rises.

Released in January, T.I.’s Toomp-produced “What You Know” started the year off audaciously as the lead single from the rapper’s fourth studio album, King. Toomp borrowed the foundation of the track from Roberta Flack’s 1969 rendition of the Impressions’ “Gone Away,” composed by Leroy Hutson, Donny Hathaway, and Curtis Mayfield. Toomp admitted that he originally wanted to simply loop the Flack sample, but it didn’t quite come out like he intended. So he was pushed to recreate it himself, with the help of his engineer, Wonder Arillo. The result was a song that moved like a soul record but hit hard enough to make you screw your face up every time you hear it.
